[tweetmeme source=”cbyndas” only_single=false]There is an epic battle brewing between “Melinda the Miserable” and “Dan the Determined” actively choosing whose side your on could cost you a hundred grand.

Let’s take a closer look.  In my professional circles I have contact with hundreds of small business owners on a regular basis.  One of my contacts (for the purpose of this conversation we will call her Melinda the Miserable) always sees the cup as half empty.  Each day she moans and complains that what others are giving her is not enough, her partners suck, vendor products don’t work, clients are too difficult to work with, the list goes on and on…Never are Melinda’s problems due to her; it is always everyone else who is at fault! It is not interesting that Melinda is miserable; it is interesting that Melinda has a goal in life to spread her misery to others.  Worse than H1N1, thru her words and actions, Melinda spreads her disease; this is where the battle begins.

On the other side exists Melinda’s opponent, Dan the Determined.  Every day Dan works with the same partners, the same vendors, has the same clients as Melinda, but every day Dan sees the cup as half full.  Dan focuses on the contribution he makes to every one he touches, and Dan reaps the rewards of his behavior.  Dan is not partnered with Melinda; he heard from her, but Dan won the battle over his attitude. Melinda tried to take it from him but he battled back and won!

Jeffrey Gitomer, likely the best sales trainer in the world, writes in the Sales Bible: The Ultimate Sales Resource that every one needs to “Study attitude; don’t just think you have a good one.  Spend 15 minutes every day reading”.  I would add to this great advice by recommending that successful business owners spend eight hours of their day interacting with other positive people.

Time after time the difference between successful business owners and those who fail is attitude.  It’s not the economy, not our partners, not technology; nothing stands in our way other than our attitude.  As a fellow business owner I realize that as soon as we all embrace the reality we are personally responsible, 100% responsible, for our own outcome, great things happen!

Fight for your right to be successful!  When you meet Melinda the Miserable tell her there is no room in your life for the likes of her and then go hang out with Dan the Determined.  You will be glad you did.
